What Is Fingerprint Jewelry and How Does It Work?

No two fingerprints in the world are the same. Not even between identical twins. That single fact is what makes fingerprint jewelry unlike anything else you can buy — or give.

A piece of fingerprint jewelry carries something that belonged to exactly one person. It can't be replicated, recreated, or replaced. And when it's engraved into jewelry and worn close to the skin, it becomes something you carry with you always.

If you've been curious about how it works, this guide covers everything.

What Is Fingerprint Jewelry?

Fingerprint jewelry is a personalized piece — a necklace, bracelet, or pendant — engraved with the actual fingerprint of someone you love. The ridge lines, curves, and whirls that make up that print are captured and transferred permanently into metal.

The result is a piece that is entirely one of a kind. Because the print itself is unique, no two pieces of fingerprint jewelry are ever the same.

Who Is It For?

Fingerprint jewelry is ordered for all kinds of reasons:

  • Parents who want to wear their child's fingerprint close to their heart
  • Couples who want a piece of each other to carry always
  • Families preserving the print of someone they've lost
  • New moms marking the arrival of a baby
  • Anyone wanting a deeply personal piece of everyday jewelry

It sits at the intersection of jewelry and keepsake — something beautiful to wear, and something meaningful to hold.

How Does It Work at Dreamy Gold?

The process is simpler than most people expect. You can simply take a photo of the finger. Alternatively you can use an ink kit or use the paper and pencil method to capture your print → How to video

Here's how it works:

  • Choose your desired piece — a necklace, bracelet, or pendant
  • Take a clear photo of the actual finger or fingerprint. Natural light works best. The print should fill the frame and be sharp and in focus. Or use one of the other methods above to capture your print.
  • Upload the photo when you place your order. Our team extracts the fingerprint digitally and traces it with precision.
  • We engrave it and ship it beautifully packaged and ready to wear or gift.

You may also email us multiple prints and we can choose the best one for your piece.

How Do I Get a Good Fingerprint Photo?

This is the question we get asked most. A few tips:

  • Press the finger firmly onto a piece of white paper using an ink pad, then photograph it. This gives a clean, high-contrast print.
  • Alternatively, photograph the fingertip directly in bright natural light at a slight angle — you can often see the ridge lines clearly this way.
  • Make sure the image is sharp, not blurry. Zoom in after taking it to check.
  • Larger fingers and children's prints often photograph most clearly.

Not sure if your photo is good enough? Send it to us before you order and we'll let you know.

Can I Use the Fingerprint of Someone Who Has Passed Away?

Yes — and this is one of the most meaningful uses of fingerprint jewelry. Funeral homes frequently capture fingerprints during the preparation process. Many families ask the funeral director specifically for a print so they can create a keepsake afterward.

If you already have an ink impression, a stamp on paper, or even an old document with a fingerprint on it, our team can work with those too. We've helped many families create pieces from older or faded prints.

What Can I Add to the Back?

Most pieces have space on the reverse side for an additional engraving — a name, a date, a short phrase, initials or add another fingerprint. It's a small detail that makes the piece feel complete.

Is It Durable Enough for Everyday Wear?

Yes. Dreamy Gold pieces are made in 18k Gold PVD stainless steel or silver, both built specifically for daily wear. The engraving is permanent — it won't fade, rub off, or wear away over time.

This isn't jewelry you take off. It's jewelry you forget you're wearing — until you look down and remember exactly what it means.
